The Way to become an Pianist Part 4: Getting to know Major Chords

After knowing about the melodies, scales and basic chords. Now its time to go more in dept of the chords. In the book of How to play Popular Piano in 10 easy lessons, Monath start off showing the minor chords. To make a chord that's is minor, simply change the middle note to a half-step down. For example, C,E, G are C major chord... change E to E♭( a note below E) will make the a minor chord (Monath 71). Moving from major to minor chords take a little bit of practice for me, because of the fingering changes a little bit, specially adding the black key to the play. As you can see below, my fingerings are touching black keys, this doesn't always happen... Only to some minor chords.

The next type of chord is the diminished chords, which basically a darker version of minor chord in my opinion. To make a diminished chords, you would lower the third note and fifth as well. For example, C diminished chord would be C, E♭ and G♭ (Monath 74) . This is an oddly chords, however it’s good for me as a musician to play complex things. I believe there is not that much of diminished chords in today world, but it’s come in handy once it’s shown up out of no where.

Learning these two type of chords takes a little bit time for me to learn because adding more combination of black keys, however its was worth it. Now I'm able to play songs that have minor and diminished chord and trained my ears for new sound. This also a good way to train my fingers for different type of chords. Have you ever play any music that have complex chords like diminished chord, what was your first thought about the chord and the song when you run into the oddly chord?

  1. As a pianist myself, I know how hard it is to get started in learning the piano. Especially with all the music theory behind it. Good luck on your musical journey!
