Fill Your Body the Right Way Part 4: Cravings

Now that I have covered the essence of hydration, carbohydrates, and vitamins, I will be addressing cravings. In Nutrition Periodization For Endurance Athletes, Bob Seebohar discusses many topics and eating tips, mainly targeting athletes that do endurance sports. On top of what one should consume and of how much, Seebohar talks about strategies to keep the body healthy. One of these is indulging your cravings. This sounds like something you shouldn’t do, but Seebohar wrote, “Listen to cravings and satisfy them within reason. If you crave a food, then by all means, eat it, but always practice portion control and moderation” (Seebohar 54). As you can see in the images below, I had a craving for sweets, so I ate some ice cream and a little bit of that Snickers bar (both of which were very delicious).
Also, Seebohar wrote, “Cravings sometimes mean your body needs the nutrients in that food, so don’t fight the urge, just be sensible and limit the quantity” (Seebohar 54). French fries are a perfect example of a salty food, and when you have a salt craving, your body probably needs it. Thus, I went to Red Robin and ate some of their delicious steak fries:

To conclude, if you have a craving, it might mean that your body needs the nutrient in whatever you desire, so you should eat a little bit of it. Do not, however pig out on it if it is unhealthy (like I did last night) because you might end up feeling sick (like me). When you have cravings, do you satisfy them? If you do, do you control the portion sizes? And what is your record for baskets of fries at Red Robin?
I’ll see you soon with my last blog about variety.

  1. I always been thinking that craving for foods is bad, but after reading your insightful information about how the body respond to craving. This made me changes the idea of craving of foods. When I’m craving for foods I try to help my self by not eating too much of it, and yes the satisfaction came along. What was your first thought about craving before you read this book?

  2. Well, Ty, I did believe that cravings are just because you are hungry, so I'd eat a banana or apple because those are my favorite fruits, so I wouldn't satisfy them, but now I think I will.
