Blog 4: Palm Muting Technique

What is Palm Muting?
Palm muting is when you place the heel of your hand on the strings near the bridge. This restricts the amount of ringing the strings will make once a note is played. It's "perfect for power chords and low not riffs played with distortion" (Capone 126).

Being Precise
"Wherever your hand is placed and how much of it touches the string is crucial" (Capone 126). For example if you put down too much pressure on the strings then you get a dull sound. Applying just the right amount of pressure is important in making notes sound good.

Hand Placement
The amount of restriction on the strings depend on where you place your hand. The strings ring less as your hand is placed closer to the neck.
Here in this picture my hand is right on the strings.

Below is a video where I first play the note normally and then add palm muting
*Note - notice the difference of how much the strings ring

It was a fun experience getting to play around with different hand placements. It's definitely difficult to keep the same amount of pressure on the strings all the time. It's a simple technique to learn yet does so much for music!
