Learning to Play Piano:
From my book piano for everyone I learned that when jumping octaves the music reads 8va to indicate to play the next notes up an octave or if it is written under the notes play below an octave. An octave is the notes A to G. when playing up or down an octave, you play those same notes but the pitch is either higher or lower. Comparing this to violin music, there aren’t signs to indicate a lower/higher octave, but it has more ledger lines to indicate the next note. This can get tricky when playing a violin because you first must count the ledger lines then determine the note. The 8va makes it easier to read piano music because there aren’t any extra ledger lines to look at.

The author Maragaret Ann Martin also describes chords, which are 3 notes played together. “chords are built up from lower note, which the called the root…a chord which has four different notes, a 3rd apart, is called a seventh chord” (70 Martin). This type of chord was easier than the other chords, which included a big stretch between my fingers. This one is simple and can be played on any root. Many well-known songs include chords played in the background, for example the American National anthem, which begins with a broken -chord passage (71 Martin). A broken chord is when each note in the chord is played individually. A blocked chord is when all the notes are played at the same time. The chord system is also something used in orchestral music, where one instrument plays the root note while the others play the next notes in the chord to make a pleasant sound.

Information from this book improves my ability in playing the violin because of how it goes over many concepts that I already knew but more in detail. With this, It also makes piano easy by how I already knew many of the concepts taught.
