Drawing: Blog 2
After I learned about the different types of drawing
materials I decided to test out different drawing styles. I started with
drawing proportionately which is basically by using lines to help guide you to draw
something more symmetrical. I chose to try the style out by drawing a cup. The author
says, “We do this by first setting up ‘boxes’ to define the height and width of
the different objects in a composition. You could call this beginning phase the
outline sketch; it will be used as a preliminary composition throughout the
rest of the drawing phases,” (Sanmiguel 90).
The box helped me draw the cup because I had a fixed width and length, so it was easier to make it more symmetrical. The box helped make it symmetrical since is was split up into different parts and it was easier to work on one thing at a time. It was alsoeasier to shape the cup so that it looked more realistic because of the box.
The next style I practiced was transparent. Drawing
an object as if it’s transparent is drawing the parts that you wouldn’t be able to see. The book says, the method allows you to draw the form and structure more easily and work around the base of the object to draw the rest of it. I chose to draw a chair and I first just drew a cube and then added the back of it. Afterwards I drew the legs and the back of the chair to make it look more realistic.
Then I erased the lines that you wouldn’t be able to see to make it look better. I thought it was a lot easier to use the transparent method and it makes the outcome nicer.
The last style I used was blocking in for modeling. This type of style of drawing is used to make different shapes by using different shading techniques. The author, David Sanmiguel says, “Blocking in should always be progressive, beginning with the lightest values and moving toward the darkest ones,” (Sanmiguel 144). This was the hardest for me to do because I was trying to shade a circle to make it look like a sphere. At first, I couldn’t get the shading right and it just looked like a circle and it was a struggle trying to shade it with the graphite stick and then blend it together with my fingers. Eventually I was able to shade parts lighter than others with the graphite and then I blend it into something that kind of looks like a sphere. It was difficult to make it into a sphere because I couldn’t really separate the darker and the lighter shades. Overall, I thought that the first two styles were pretty simple compared to the last one. What type of drawing styles do you use?
