“Drawing with Pen”

To begin drawing with pen, you must first begin with a pencil. Unlike the previous blogs, you should create a quite detailed sketch in pencil before you move on to using pen. It is better to have clear lines rather than barely visible lines as it will make the drawing much easier when you draw over the pencil with pen. At the end you will be able to erase any visibly pencil marks.

When it comes to drawing with pen, there are many different types or characteristics of a line.  For example, they have characteristics such as:

·        Broken line

·        Uniform line

·        Angular line

·        Bold line

·        Curved line

Drawing with these variations in types of lines are to convey the drawing’s abstract qualities instead of just drawing the object with precision. Another purpose is that “the characteristics of your line work draw the eye of the viewer becoming part of the composition,” (page 128).

This picture here displays the initial sketch that has been drawn in pencil and that will soon be drawn over with pen

When beginning with the pen, you first want to draw in the long, continuous lines. You want to do this by using long, sweeping strokes so that no ripples in the line are visible. Since you do not have the ability to erase the ink, this helps create a cleaner image. You must also be sure of the lines you are planning to make as you cannot reverse them.

Next you should move on to the small details. When you do this, you should vary you angles. Vary the angles of your lines and pen so that you can create character within your drawing. Once you draw in the smaller details, you can go back and draw over lines that need to be thicker or darker. You will also then finish shading the object using a crosshatching type of style.

  1. This is so good, I'm proud to call you my peer! I can tell that you have put a lot of hard work and effort into this and that's a really good quality. I don't really have any critique to display, but i just want to say that the use of the lines and their placement show that you have really amazing potential. Also, the different depth in the shades of your strokes are impressive as well.
