"Contouring 3-D Forms"

Contouring 3-D forms is to take a drawing and make it 3-D using certain techniques. To begin, you start with an initial sketch of the shape with no detail such as the one below. After you have created your sketch you will begin to create swift, curving marks to contour around the form. By doing this, it begins to create a contour of the shape.

You should then create edge definition by outlining the shape and making it darker to truly see the shape of your drawing. At the same time you should also begin to cross-contour along the drawing which is very similar to crosshatching. Once your drawing begins to have a 3-D look, you can then move on to the finishing touches. This is anything that you decide to darken, add more detail, etc.
