Art of Drawing

Drawing: Blog 4

While drawing you have to accept that what you draw doesn’t need to be perfect. As I’ve been learning new techniques I realized that the first line you draw doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s easier to use gestural drawing because it makes it easier to draw. As the author writes, “Gestural drawing and outline drawing allow you to represent the model with liner, sinuous, and carefree stokes. Artists resort to this technique when they want to give the sketch a more expressive effect” (Sanmiguel 88). Using gestural drawing is a good technique for beginners because it helps make the outline for the shape that you want. Gestural drawing helps show that the drawing doesn’t need to look perfect because even with many lines outlining the shape it still looks nice because it adds more volume to the drawing.

In order to outline a definite shape, you have to make the line darker. The author says that you have to select the lines that define the drawing and use darker strokes to build up the shape. As I darkened the lines it was easier to make the shape that I wanted because of the previous lines I had already drawn. I could see which ones showed off the shape the most, so I just made those lines darker. I think this is the easiest technique because you have more room to be able to make the drawing look the way you want since there are already lines outlining the shape, so you have more choices for the exact way you want the shape to look. If you’ve ever used gestural drawing, is it easier than other techniques?

  1. I do a lot of drawing too, but I don't know if I've used gestural drawing before. I normally dissect the object into basic 3D shapes and get an outline that way. Looks like you're definitely doing good with your drawing!

    1. I appreciate your comment. You should try gestural drawing, personally I think it's helpful. I might try to dissect the object into 3D shapes as well to see how that works.

  2. Tarnvir, your drawing came out great, it looks so clean and precise! I love how you included pictures of both before and after you made the lines darker. It really helped me see the difference. I don't think I have ever tried gestural drawing before, but I want to try it out some time, especially after seeing this post! Are you going to use this technique again on your next drawing?

    1. Thank you so much, I tried to make the lines darker to make it look more clean. You should definitely try gestural drawing, it's a great way to draw. I'm most likely going to use this technique again because I really liked it and it helped me keep control over how I wanted the drawing to look like.

  3. I don't really draw too much unless I get bored but i have used gestural drawing before and I find it way easier because it's not too detailed but detailed enough. I can't wait to see what new technique you use next:)

    1. I appreciate your comment. I agree, gestural drawing is a lot easier to use. I think that gestural drawing is easier because you have more control over how the drawing turns out in the end.

  4. I am not typically a drawer, but when I do get around to it I always use gestural drawing! I almost never darker the lines, however the way you did it made it look very professional and clean! I also love how you mentioned in the beginning that not every drawing needs to be perfect! That is very true and something I need to keep in mind.

    1. You should try make the lines darker at the end of your drawing when you do draw so that the drawing itself looks more clean. I mentioned that drawings don't need to be because I used to think that my drawing had to be perfect but then I realized it's okay.
