Diet for Dance: The Paleo Diet Part 1

At last years districts competition, the Chatelaines
went home with a clean sweep.
My chosen IRP book is Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo, and is about the Paleo diet. My goal is to improve my eating habits to better myself as an athlete. Paleo is short for Paleolithic, and my book states, "Whatever name you choose, the "Paleo" way of eating is simple: Mimic our ancestors, who suffered from fewer chronic diseases than modern populations" (Sanfilippo 22). The diet is similar to the diet of cavemen, in that it cuts out gluten, grain, legumes, dairy, and refined sugars (things cavemen didn’t eat). The book also mentions that Paleo is an extremely tough, but extremely beneficial way of eating, and it supports fat loss, digestive health, blood sugar regulation, heart health, cancer recovery, athletic performance and much more. The book offers many different dietary plans, and I am going to focus on the athletic performance section of the book to help me prepare for the upcoming dance competition season. My diet started November 23rd, and I plan to continue until December 15th. The first few days haven't been as tough as I thought they would be. I have swapped unhealthy snack options for fruit, almonds, and other healthy foods. I think it is too soon for me to tell, but I feel a little more fit at dance, due to fueling my body with healthier foods. This is especially helpful, since our team just started going full force into competition routines. If you are an athlete, do you think a healthy diet change could help you improve in your sport?

My go-to snacks.

  1. I love your post, Audrey! It really makes me look back on my days of playing sports and make me regret all the bad eating choices I've made. When I used to be an athlete, (since I do not participate in athletics anymore) I ate basically what I eat now. Heavy protein diet, with a lot of carbs and vegetables which isn't bad. But it was polluted with tons of junk food and unhealthy drinks such as coke. Looking back, I really wish that I changed my eating habits. I would've felt a lot better during practice, and maybe I wouldn't be sucking my stomach in during photos often. If you keep implementing this diet in the future with your dance career, how do you think it will effect how you perform? Will you possibly be the best dancer on the team??

    1. Well Jeremiah, I don't know about "best dancer on the team", but I think if I keep this up through competition season, it will drastically help me with endurance, strength, technique, and more. Also, it improves my everyday life too, because a healthy life is a happy life!

  2. Oh, for sure! Having a proper diet, is essential to maintaining strength and succeeding in your craft. I'm a pretty big guy to be a runner, and as a result, I have refined my diet in the last year or so and despite growing two inches, I've only lost weight. I don't necessarily have a dietary plan, I just eat a lot less of everything, and I have seen the effects. What would you recommend that I try in order to not gain as much weight, but still not lose muscle? How does your diet apply to all athletes and not just dancers?

    1. It's really cool to share dieting experiences with other athletes! I think that because you're cutting out so much in this diet, it's essential to make sure you're still getting everything you need. It is easy to feel weak at times due to a lack of iron, so you need to make sure you get lots of greens and protein. This diet is beneficial to anybody!
